The pressure filter is rightfully considered the "heart" of the hydraulic cleaning system. It's not just a replaceable part, but a key component that determines the service life and smooth operation of the entire machine.
The role of hydraulics and the Achilles heel of the system

It operates under enormous pressure, reaching hundreds of bars. Hydraulic fluid (oil) circulates within it, performing two functions: transmitting energy and lubricating moving parts.
The main enemy of hydraulics is contamination. Tiny metal particles resulting from wear on pumps, motors, and cylinders, abrasive dust that has seeped through seals, and oil oxidation products—all pose a mortal danger to high-precision system components. Filters are designed to combat these contaminants. They are conventionally divided into two types: suction filters (installed in the pump suction line) and pressure.
Pressure Filter: A Strategic Line of Defense
Unlike the suction filter, which protects the pump from large particles, the pressure filter is installed after the hydraulic pump, on the high-pressure line. Its purpose is to capture the smallest and most dangerous contaminants circulating in the closed circuit of the system.
Why a pressure line?
- Protection of the most expensive components: After the pump, high-pressure oil enters the most vulnerable and precise components: control valves (spool valves), servo systems, and hydraulic motors. Clearances in these components are measured in microns. Even the smallest solid particle can cause the spool valve to jam, scuff the hydraulic motor walls, or cause valve leaks. The pressure filter is the last barrier preventing contaminants from reaching these critical components.
- High efficiency at working pressure: Pressure filters are designed to operate in extreme conditions. They feature a durable steel housing capable of withstanding constant pressure surges and hydraulic shock. High pressure ensures effective filtration, achieving a filter fineness of up to 10 microns, and sometimes as low as 3-5 microns.
- Containing your own wear and tear: During operation, the hydraulic system continuously generates new abrasive wear. Particles trapped between the pump's friction pairs themselves cause accelerated wear. A pressure filter installed at the beginning of the circuit breaks this chain, preventing wear products from circulating further.
Design and key features
A modern pressure filter for a backhoe loader is a high-tech product. It consists of:
- Durable steel body with threaded ports for screwing into the hydraulic line.
- Replaceable filter element, made from special materials (fiberglass, impregnated cellulose, synthetic fibers), folded in a special way to create a large filtration area.
- Bypass valve. This element is critical for safety. If the filter element becomes clogged and creates excessive resistance, the valve opens, allowing oil to bypass the filter. This prevents pump damage due to oil starvation, but leaves the system unprotected. Activation of the bypass valve signals the need for immediate filter replacement.
- Pollution indicator (optional). Many models are equipped with a mechanical or electrical indicator that shows the filter's level of contamination. This allows for filter replacement not just according to the schedule, but based on the actual filter's condition.
Key parameters for selecting a pressure filter:
- Filtration fineness: The size of the smallest particles it can capture (measured in microns, µm). For pressure lines, this is typically 10 µm.
- Nominal and maximum pressure: The filter must be rated to withstand the operating pressure of the specific backhoe loader model.
- Bandwidth: The volume of oil that the filter can pass through itself without creating excessive resistance.
Consequences of neglecting a pressure filter
Skimping on timely pressure filter replacement is a classic case of "a penny saved is a penny earned." The consequences can be disastrous:
- Failure of the hydraulic pump: Contaminated oil causes abrasive wear of the rotor plates and stator walls, which leads to a drop in performance and complete destruction of the pump.
- Distributor jamming: The smallest particles disrupt the movement of the spool valves, which manifests itself in twitching of the working equipment, spontaneous lowering of the boom or complete loss of control.
- Wear of hydraulic cylinders: Scoring on the piston rod surface and inside the cylinder liners leads to pressure loss, oil leaks and the need for expensive repairs.
- Failure of hydraulic motors for rotation and travel: Repair or replacement of these components is one of the most expensive items in equipment maintenance.
Maintenance: Simple but vital
The rules for servicing pressure filters are simple:
- Regular replacement in accordance with the regulations. Replacement intervals are specified in the machine operating instructions, but they should be reduced when working in difficult conditions (dust, sand, high humidity).
- Using only original or high-quality analogs. Cheap filters may have low-quality filter material that deteriorates quickly, or a faulty bypass valve.
- Mandatory replacement of hydraulic fluid Along with the filter. Adding clean oil to a dirty system is pointless.
- Visual inspection for leaks and carefully monitor the pollution indicator readings.
A hydraulic pressure filter in a backhoe loader is more than just a consumable. It's a strategic investment in the longevity and reliability of your equipment. Its cost is incomparably lower than the cost of repairing a hydraulic pump or distributor, which it prevents. Timely replacement of a high-quality filter ensures that the "heart" of your machine will beat smoothly and powerfully throughout its entire lifespan, ensuring trouble-free operation and maximum return on investment.
